This winter immersion represents the planting of a seed – the opening of a ecological, sustainably-modeled Institute of sacred dance & related holistic arts, for which we are still searching for location and collecting partners, core faculty and co-creators. Yet, the model of this program, in which we practice the holistic dance language within a community, as part of a sustainable lifestyle, begins to look like the seeds for a dream envisioned long, long ago … So its a very exciting moment !
GUEST TEACHERS/pRESENTERS
JULIET RABIA GENTILLE
Juliet is deeply passionate about Sufism, the high art of Persian poetry, music and culture. Sufism has shaped her life in the most beautiful ways and she hopes to share this esoteric world that few have access to.
As a specialist in her field, she has been interviewed for works published by Al-Jazeera America, NYU, Kindle Singles, and Farrar, Straus and Giroux. She is the author of a forthcoming narrative nonfiction book about her personal experiences studying Sufism in India, Turkey and North America. Her research on Sufi women forms the central narrative of an upcoming documentary feature entitled Shaykha: The Film. She has written on Sufism, Islamic feminism and sustainability in various publications.
In 2008 she became a founding member and Islamic Co-leader for Faith House Manhattan, a vibrant interfaith community in Midtown Manhattan. Together they built a nomadic ‘Tent of Abraham’ in Manhattan, where people of all religions and no religion could gather, pray and celebrate life together.
She has lectured and led prayer ceremonies at various venues including the U.N. General Assembly, Barnard College, University of Massachusetts, Riverside Church, Cathedral St. John the Divine, Union Theological Seminary, New York Open Center, Auburn Seminary, One Spirit Learning Alliance, City Winery, Subud Center and Nyack College in lower Manhattan.
Since 2001, she has also practiced the healing modality known as “Pizzica Tarantella” from her ancestral home in Southern Italy, under the tutelage of Alessandra Belloni.
